Our Story

Our journey traces back seven years to our move to the ATX area. Over time, frustration grew as each year brought disappointment in the price, variety, and quality of seedlings available for our home garden. This led us to start growing our own from seeds, culminating in the birth of The Gardening Gnome in October 2023.

Alex and Steven—both seasoned subsistence farmers with a combined experience of 25+ years, including 7 years in the local Austin scene. Alex's background includes work with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, while Steven has farmed acres of crops in rural North-East Texas. Although our business is new, our expertise in the field is well-established.

Our mission, encapsulated in the phrase "Turning Gardens Into Gnomesteads," aims to address the fact that less than 10% of produce in the Austin area comes from local sources. We're committed to providing top-notch, organically grown heirloom seedlings and education. Our goal is to reduce reliance on the food supply chain and contribute to a more sustainable, locally sourced food system.

We deeply appreciate your support and involvement in this journey. Your feedback is invaluable to us, so please explore our offerings and share your thoughts. Here's to a fruitful collaboration! Pun intended.
